Engineers of the Polytechnic University of the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne created a folding drone courier capable of carrying loads and significantly decreasing in size when idle. The frame of the drone is made of carbon fiber, due to which the design of the aircraft turned out to be light and, most importantly, strong – additional protection of the cargo during transportation will not prevent.
In working condition, the drone is similar to a dandelion and can carry a cargo weighing up to 500 grams, but in the future this figure is planned to improve. The folding structure protects not only the cargo, but also the propellers of the device, and when landing it will protect the people nearby from rotating blades.
The developers explained that the drone has a number of autonomous functions that will be useful for the device in operation. In their opinion, such unmanned aerial vehicles are the basis for the logistics of the future.
The concept of the delivery of goods with the help of drones is being developed in a number of large companies. Among them there are Chinese vendors and Amazon, who was one of the first to introduce similar technologies and even had time to test something already.
