In early August, the Russian brand BQ announced the release of the BQ-5504 Strike Selfie Max camera, which was equipped with the main camera module from Sony with a resolution of 16 megapixels, as well as a front 13-megapixel camera. But as we found out, these are far from the only advantages of a budget novelty.
The device came to us in such an interesting package – in general, BQ smartphones can be easily distinguished by a memorable box, which consists of two modules. Inside – the smartphone itself, the power adapter with a micro-USB cable, documentation and various amenities like a promotional code for the purchase of accessories.
The BQ Strike Selfie Max is equipped with a 5.5-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, which has improved color reproduction. Many images and applications look very colorful on it; Of course, I would like a full-fledged Full HD, but this should not go to budget smartphones, but to devices several times more expensive.
Under the "hood" of the novelty – quad-core processor MediaTek MT6737 with LTE support, 3 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory supporting microSD memory up to 128 GB. Frankly, they thought that the "operative" would be limited to 2 GB, as it now happens in this segment, but everything turned out. 3 GB is enough for the eyes to play games and perform resource-intensive tasks, and the microSD card will always remain with a free space.
Autonomy provides a battery with a capacity of 3000 mAh – we checked, with an average mode of use (social networks / calls, sometimes games), the smartphone easily "lives" almost two days without recharging. Its role was played by the optimization of hardware for the Android 7.0 Nougat operating system.

The manufacturer positions its smartphone primarily as a self-device, facilitated by a front 13-megapixel camera. Externally BQ Strike Selfie Max looks stylish: a gold case, small frames around the display, a back cover made of ground metal, so that the smartphone does not slip out of the hand. The case has a rounded design, the front panel is closed with a strong curved glass 2,5D.
At the top with the front camera is a speaker grille, proximity sensor, LED for notifications and … one more flash. Now it is understandable why this focus on Selfie: an additional flash will help to make a high-quality photo on the front camera even in poor lighting.
The only thing that did not like at once on the front panel – the lack of standard touch buttons under the screen, everything is controlled by software elements from Android 7.0. Why then leave so much free space that is not occupied in any way? You could either make a larger screen, or put a fingerprint scanner (well, or the manufacturer's logo, after all).
But no, the fingerprint scanner is here behind, just below the camera and flash, and the logo is even lower. The elements are centered, so everything looks whole and beautiful. The fingerprint reader works quickly. Bottom – the hole is very loud speaker, which can easily be used to create a party.
On the right side – the power button and volume rocker; On top – audio jack 3,5 mm, at the bottom – micro-USB port for charging.
Unlike many other state employees, this model is equipped with two slots under the micro-SIM and an independent slot for the microSD memory card. That is, you do not have to choose – to insert another SIM card or memory card, since everything will fit here.
As for performance, despite the fact that the smartphone uses not the most productive and fresh 64-bit MediaTek MT6737 chip with 4 cores, 1.3 GHz frequency and Mali-T720 MP2 graphics, the smartphone copes with most of the heavy tasks, It helps 3 GB of RAM. Even demanding games do not lag and run without problems. True, benchmarks on such devices are useless to launch, especially to compare them with the flagships from Huawei or HTC. But if you still want to know how much the smartphone is gaining in AnTuTu and Geekbench, then these figures are 28 900 points and 1500 points respectively in multi-core mode.
In general, the smartphone has a lot of software improvements, which compensate for not the most powerful "stuffing". So, for example, the MiraVision application is preset, which provides a lot of settings for creating a better display of all information on the display. DuraSpeed mode allows you to run serious software and demanding games without reducing performance.
Both the front and main cameras give decent pictures, especially in good lighting conditions. The camera interface is clear, with a lot of settings. There is support for individual modes: portrait (face is recognized, focus is taken and blurred background), beautiful face or panorama.
Here are a couple of examples.

If you sum up a short summary of the review – for your money BQ-5504 Strike Selfie Max is quite a decent smartphone. Of course, resourceful Chinese for such money offer a "stuffing" a little more powerful, but this model bribes a quality assembly, advanced cameras and appearance. Moreover, this is an additional reason to support the Russian manufacturer.
