Cosmonauts from the International Space Station on the tenth of September had to hide for some time in a special shelter because of the danger associated with a flash on the Sun, the head of the Scientific Research Institute of Nuclear Physics Mikhail Panasyuk told about this.
At a press conference in the multimedia center of MIA "Russia Today" Panasyuk said that the beginning of the increase in proton events and radiation exposure coincided with the time when the ISS passed "by the Sun". Therefore, the cosmonauts working on the ISS received the "Alert" command, after which the entire crew took places in the shelter with which the space station was equipped.
The team was given at 20:00 Moscow time, because at that time the proton flux became stronger than during the last solar flare recorded on September 7th. Panasyuk noted that a powerful stream of protons can penetrate the shell of the ship and pose a serious threat to the health of the crew.
The outbreak on the Sun, recorded on Wednesday, has become the most powerful in the last 12 years.
